Stanground is a suburb of Peterborough, a city in the county of Cambridgeshire in the East of England. Stanground is located to the north of Peterborough city centre, and is predominantly a residential area. It is a relatively new development, with much of the housing having been built in the latter half of the 20th century. The area is well connected to the rest of the city, with several bus routes running through Stanground and good road links to the surrounding area. Stanground has a mix of different housing types, including detached houses, semi-detached houses, and flats. Historical Development of Stanground
Stanground was originally a small village that was located on the edge of the Fens, an area of low-lying marshland in eastern England. The village was likely settled in the Anglo-Saxon period, and there is evidence of a church and a manor house dating from this time. In the 20th century, Stanground underwent significant development as the city of Peterborough expanded. Much of the housing in the area was built in the latter half of the century, and Stanground became a predominantly residential suburb of Peterborough. Stanground Village and its original church is mentioned in the Domesday survey in 1086. The Stanground Manor house dating from the 13th century, was granted to Princess Elizabeth (Queen Elizabeth I) in 1550, before being destroyed by fire in 1899.
